He graduated in architecture from the Milan Polytechnic in 1959, launching his career in design in the 1960s with the opening of his own professional studio. From 1961 to 1963, he held the position of design director at Rinascente, a prestigious department store chain. In 1987, he founded Mario Bellini Associati Srl, now known as Mario Bellini Architect(s), assuming the presidency. Insider brand:

In 1953, brothers Piero Ambrogio and Franco Busnelli founded Fratelli Busnelli fu Giuseppe in Meda, Italy, focusing on exploring new foams for chair and sofa upholstery. In 1966, Piero Busnelli left the family business to focus on developing new materials. After a collaboration with designer Gianfranco Frattini at Plestem in his hometown, Piero Busnelli joined forces with Cesare Cassina in 1966 to launch Cassina & Busnelli, shortened to C&B Italia. From the beginning, the company took an industrial approach and specialized in the production of plastic furniture, using cold-foamed polyurethane suitable for large-scale production. Designers affiliated with the company include such illustrious names as Mario Bellini, Vico Magistretti, Afra and Tobia Scarpa, along with Marco Zanuso. C&B Italia's early products include Scarpa's Coronado seating group (1966) and Zanuso's Lombrico modular seating system (1968). In 1968, under the leadership of designer Francesco Binfaré, a research and development center was established to collaborate with companies such as Bayer and DuPont in developing new applications for plastics and plastic fibers. In 1969, Gaetano Pesce's UP series was launched, while starting in 1972, Bellini's Le Bambole seating group went into production. In 1973, Piero Ambrogio Busnelli acquired the shares of Cassina, and the company's name was changed to B&B Italia. Multiple new designers joined the team, including Jeffrey Bernet.
